The bracketing (first and last) tunes come from Audrey Town’s 18th-century collection A Frolick; the song is trumpeter Howard Evans’s (RIP) tune to a verse text by the great novelist Thomas Hardy: a bitter recollection of the usual reward for the nameless veterans who won the Napoleonic Wars but were abandoned in their aftermath. From the great folk/brass band Brass Monkey.
